Sculpting time

LÄUTEN AUF DEM FLUSS1986  black and white photograph

The poet must understand that life is vulgar and plain, which is the fault of his poetry

and those who live should know that art is in vain

and that the fault lies in his lack of strict requirements and serious attitudes towards life issues."

 - Mikhail Bakhtin

Sculpting time is self-conscious, and the subject of time is just a solution to me.

My awareness of time's existing long before Roman Signer and Cai had an impact on me. But both of the artists' work inspired me to turn into time subjects.

The artwork which inspired me most is: 'LÄUTEN AUF DEM FLUSS'1986, which means ringing on the river.

There are a lot of artist used time to their theme, as if like a human is having the curiosity of time since history.

But as for my analysis of two of this artist , they are quit in the middle.

some of the artworks are having the connections between time and others, for example, in Chengdu China , Roman signer had a show with large and small projection images flash silently on the white wall of the A4 Art Museum.

These arrays of light grids with retro tones like reversed negative hues run through the entire exhibition hall together with the high or low projection brackets in front of them.

An installation work with a strong sense of "a moment" seemed like artworks became the profile,or fossil of its own epriod .  The content of the image is a loop of footage that resembles a scientific experiment: the gushing water is hitting the balloon; the sand piles pass through the circular hole in the centre of the cabinet layer by layer...the occasional shadow band  Silent effects reminiscent of silent movies of Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton.  But these images have no editing, no performance, and it’s hard to say that there is a storyline, or it's just recording the ongoing work of him at a time between 1975 and 1989.

The form and experimental nature of his works seem to bear the shadow of the Fluxus, but he also did not use art to intervene in the radical ideas of society; his works are also often used with Land Art and performance art  (Performance Art), but besides reminiscent of Richard Long’s pacing back and forth on the grass and Joseph Beuys’ weird behaviour, Signer has nothing to do with them, and it is more difficult to classify them.

the artworks of not-that-much-serious Profiles, and the sculpture of time, in another word, the moment sculpture.

In this way, art, life and science intersect and react in Signer's "event".  Some of them have the result of an event, such as explosions and balloons floating away, and some just show the process of the event.

Speaking of balloons and artworks placed in the air, reminds me of Artist

Cai Guoqiang, he uses the traditional Chinese firework to make the moment"sky ladder", but fireworks which normally celebrated the Spring festival.

When discussing with the visual arts, I believe some of their art connects to the ideology of  Zen, it's really doesn't matter how colourful the artwork it is.

Quote by what Umberto Eco said:

The transformation of clouds, the reflection of water, the lines of the earth, the sunlight reflected by the dew, think that all of these confirm the endless and ever-changing victory of all things...", but we are all living in vulgarity  The mortals of the world because we "living in such a civilization: our free association of visual imagination still needs to be artificially possessed of processed facts and placed under certain revelatory intentions..... In this kind of civilization, not only is the appreciator required to act freely in accordance with the association caused by artificial stimuli in his mind but also he is required to judge the artificial object..."
